The Couch (poem)

Laydown the burden

Of all you’ve partially lived

The part ways,

The little bits,

Sort-ofs

And maybes

The weight of all that’s left unsaid

It tethers you to us

To a life grown small

Drop your guilt

It has no place here.

It will rot your core.

Drop the mask

of loving husband,

The explanations,

late nights spent at work,

The tired excuses, layers

slip-covering broken hearts.

Let “I want a different life”

Be my emancipation,

A blazing testament of truth

no longer smothered deep.

May it illuminate your way

out the door

onto a path divorced from mine.

Go!

Leave now!

And live.

For my dear I know I will.
